What Is Mercury Retrograde

Earth and Mercury are orbiting the sun at very different distances and speeds. Because of this, every three months(ish) Mercury appears on earth to go backward in the sky. The best way to think about this is with two cars driving on the freeway, where Mercury is the jackass that passed you going 90. Later, you pass Mercury when they’re dozing off doing 55 in a 70 zone. Mercury isn’t really going backward, just slower.

How Does Mercury Retrograde Affect Us?

According to, Mercury rules the parts of our lives that deal with communication. This is everything from speaking, listening, reading, editing, negotiating, selling, and buying. Mercury also affects travel, telecommunications, and code. (Facebook and Instagram are both going in and out the day I write this, weird!)

Astrologyzone also mentions that Mercury isn’t exactly at fault. What astrologists believe is that, in a retrograde period, Mercury is napping. When Mercury is awake we have more order in the areas of communication, business travel, buying and selling.
